Facebook and Instagram are platforms that contribute to the purpose of the Yellow September: suicide prevention. The campaign began in Brazil in 2015 and is the result of a partnership between the Center for Valuing Life (CVV), the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) and the Brazilian Association of Psychiatry (ABP). Awareness actions are carried out in several cities throughout the country, with the aim of alerting the Brazilian population to the issue.
Data from the Ministry of Health indicate an increase in the number of suicides in Brazil. To combat these indices, Mark Zuckerberg's platforms have tools that help prevent such cases. Resources can prevent (or reduce) the number of photos and videos that encourage suicidal behavior on the network, as well as provide a way to connect those facing a difficult time with people who care about their well-being.
Numbers
In 2015, the country registered 11,736 cases, 12% more than the 10,490 deaths registered in 2010. Currently, the death rate with this cause reaches 5.5 per 100 thousand inhabitants. The main victims are men, who represent 79% of cases (saude.gov.br/2017/ Setembro).
Facebook and Instagram Tools
Report suspicious cases
Facebook offers a suicide prevention tool directly in a friend's feed or profile. When viewing suspicious activity, you can report a user who is in need of help and check the "I want to help" option. Facebook receives a notification and sends a message to the person offering help, such as the opportunity to talk to someone.
